Wednesday's Women to Honor ...
... Moment to Remember
Picture
On this date, October 23, in 1850, Paulina Wright Davis (left) and Lucy Stone (right) organized and led the first National Women's Rights Convention in Worchester, MA  Approximately 900, interestingly mostly men, attended the convention and represented 11 of then 31 states - including 1 from California, which had just joined the union as the 31st state in September.  The convention's mission and purpose was defined when its first resolution was approved: "to secure [for woman] political, legal, and social equality with man, until her proper sphere is determined by what alone should determine it, her powers and capacities, strengthened and refined by an education in accordance with her nature."
The convention was held annually until 1861, when the Civil War began and superseded this gathering.  The overriding focus during those years was on women attaining the right to vote.  For, without the right to vote, most other womens rights initiatives would be very difficult  to secure.
