THIS WEEK'S FALLEN PATRIOTS TO HONOR:
Sadly, there was 1 US military service member killed in a Global War on Terror (GWOT) combat zone last week.
US Army Special Forces soldier, Sergeant First Class Josha "Zach" Beale, of the 3rd Special Forces Group, was killed by small arms fire during his third tour in Afghanistan.

And, back on the home front, ...
... unfortunately, during this past week, 2 Peace Officers died in the Line of Duty. US Marshal Norman Merkel in Texas and Mobile Police Officer Sean Tuder in Alabama died serving and protecting our communities.
Please, pray for all these fallen Patriots and their family and friends in mourning.

[ Honoring these lost astronauts: Space Shuttle Challenger (top), Apollo 1 (bottom left), Space Shuttle Columbia (bottom right) = public domain images ]
During this week, we remember and honor 17 astronauts who lost their lives in pursuit of America's pioneering spirit. The Apollo 1 mission, on January 27, 1967, the Space Shuttle Challenger flight on January 28, 1986, and the Space Shuttle Columbia mission on February 1, 2003, all ended in disaster. This year, we'll focus on the Space Shuttle Challenger tragedy and its impact on schools.
[Optional audio: Tap "Listen in Browser" so you can listen to a live recording of the Challenger's liftoff and shortened flight.]

... This was a tragic event for all of America - one that most Americans over age 40 recall vividly as they were students watching this unfold on TV in their school classroom in 1986...
Among the 7 crew members lost during that Space Shuttle Challenger, was Teacher Christa McAuliffe, from New Hampshire. Selected from 11,000 NASA applicants, she was going to be the first teacher in space - broadcasting a science lesson live to schoolkids from the Shuttle.

[HIGHLIGHTS OF: The U.S. Flag Code stating how citizens should conduct themselves during this ceremony is below.]
Title 36, Chapter 10 PATRIOTIC CUSTOMS
National anthem; Star-Spangled Banner, conduct during playing:
During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should render the military salute at the first note of the anthem and retain this position until the last note. When the flag is not displayed, those present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed there.
Note: A new law was passed on October 30, 2008 that authorizes veterans and active-duty military not in uniform can now render the military-style hand salute during the playing of the national anthem. This publication is currently being updated to reflect the new law.

The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, "I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.", should be rendered by standing at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. When not in uniform men should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should remain silent, face the flag, and render the military salute.
