For our third Be a Stud Citizen Message of the year, we've chosen to highlight "respect" as it pertains to the Pledge of Allegiance and the opportunity to improve the Pledge and the impact it makes on students.

Below are two videos, one old, with comedian Red Skelton on CBS in 1969, and one new, from Ernie Johnson of TNT's NBA show in 2020, that reinforce the importance of the Pledge of Allegiance and
connect the word "respect" to it
.

Over these past 5 years of working Flag Steward's 'Pre-Pledge Tribute' program into schools, I've witnessed the Pledge "monotony" that Skelton's teacher witnessed in the 1920s.  And, like Skelton's teacher, I've discussed the Pledge with many kids and the number one complaint is that the Pledge is not "inclusive" (encompassing of America's diversity and expanded values and views) enough.  So for the past couple years, I've been thinking about and researching how to "modernize" the Pledge.  I've seen tons of petitions online asking for changes to the Pledge to better reflect American society's evolution since it was last altered in 1954.  But, I've always felt that the folks who recite it most, students, not older citizens, should lead this charge.
So, after witnessing Ernie Johnson's broadcast about Velton Hodge's recommended Pledge change, I decided it was time to take action.  Ernie Johnson was kind enough to introduce me to Velton.  We spoke about his focus on the word, "respect" being added.
But, to me, and the students I've heard from over the years and am rallying to Renew, Reword, and Re-energize the Pledge, to Resuscitate the Pledge, a one word alteration is not enough.  Three months from now, on Patriots Day, April 19th, Flag Steward will host a first-ever Student (virtual) Convention to Resuscitate the Pledge.  More details to follow soon. ;) :) ;)
