On this date, July 21st of 1865, the Wild West's legendary, Wild Bill Hickok won what was considered the first "western shootout" - a quick-draw duel with Davis Tutt in the market square of Springfield, Missouri. Made famous by Harper's Magazine publishing the story about this Hickok shootout two years later, quick-draw duels then became a centerpiece of western novels, radio dramas, and films.

All Flags at State Capitol of CALIFORNIA (CA: July 21): CA Governor ordered all Flags at the State Capitol, in a memo posted to Governor's website on Wed., June 20, to half-staff, without a specific date/time set by the Governor, so assumedly Capitol staff is enabling this tribute on Thu., July 21, in honor of Kern County Fire Captain Brian Falk, who died while on duty on July 14. All Flags across ARKANSAS (AR: July 19 - 22): Arkansas' Governor, via tweet at about 12p CST on Tue., July 19, ordered all (US & State) Flags at government / public facilities across the state, to half-staff until sunset on Fri., July 22, in honor of Jonesboro Police Department Officer Vincent Parks, who died during a training exercise on July 17, 2022.. All Flags across NEW MEXICO (NM: July 18 - 22): New Mexico's Governor ordered, at approximately 11am MST on Mon., July 18, all (US & State) Flags at all government / public facilities across the state to half-staff, immediately until sunset on Fri., July 22, in mourning for four Bernalillo County first responders killed in a Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office helicopter crash on Saturday (pictured left to right - top to bottom): Undersheriff Larry Koren, Lieutenant Fred Beers, and Deputy Michael Levinson, all of the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office, and Bernalillo County Fire Department Rescue Specialist Matthew King were killed in a helicopter crash in the line of duty on July 16 while assisting with firefighting efforts in San Miguel County. Title 36, Chapter 10 PATRIOTIC CUSTOMS
National anthem; Star-Spangled Banner, conduct during playing:
During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should render the military salute at the first note of the anthem and retain this position until the last note. When the flag is not displayed, those present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed there.
Note: A new law was passed on October 30, 2008 that authorizes veterans and active-duty military not in uniform can now render the military-style hand salute during the playing of the national anthem. This publication is currently being updated to reflect the new law.
Pledge of Allegiance to the flag; manner of delivery:
The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, "I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.", should be rendered by standing at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. When not in uniform men should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should remain silent, face the flag, and render the military salute.
