Happy St. Patrick's Day!
On this date, Mar. 17, of 1780, General George Washington gave the Continental Army a day off, a holiday, in the middle of the American Revolutionary War. Why did he do this? Washington stated the holiday was granted "as an act of solidarity with the Irish (to show support) in their fight for independence" from the British. But, it was also done in consideration of the harsh, 28 snowstorms winter that the army had endured in NJ. Leading up to this day off, around 10,000 Continental Army soldiers survived the brutal 1779-1780 winter in cabins they built at Jockey Hollow, NJ.

When not in uniform men should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart.
