Today's Story from Our Flag
... tells us about the Selective Service ...
... tells us about the Selective Service ...
On this date (OTD), May 18, in 1917, Congress passed the Selective Service Act of 1917. This law gave President Wilson the ability to draft citizens to fight in World War I. There were not enough volunteers joining the military to go fight the Germans in World War I. So, for the first time since the Civil War, a conscription (draft) was put in place for all men between the ages of 21 and 30 to register for potential drafting into one of the military branches (see picture above). The Selective Service was upheld as constitutional by the Supreme Court and continues today for all men age 18 and up. And there's discussion now that women may be required to register in the future.
