Israel Isidore Beilin was born on this date, May 11, of 1888, in Imperial Russia. Upon moving to America at age 5, his name changed / 'Americanized' to Irving Berlin. During his 60 year songwriting career he wrote more than 1,500 songs - including the scores (title song) of 20 Broadway musicals and 15 Hollywood films. He lived for 101 years and at his 100th birthday, Walter Cronkite said Irving, "helped write the story of this country, capturing the best of who we are and the dreams that shape our lives."
His most well known song is a patriotic American favorite -
