Today's Story from Our Flag
... from horse trainer to Army General to U.S. President ...
Picture
Born on this date, April 27, in 1822, Ulysses S. Grant, grew up as an Ohio farm boy who loved to train and ride horses.  As a young adult, he went to college at the U.S. Military Academy - also known as West Point.  While serving as an Army officer in the Mexican-American War, his horse-riding skills became legendary at the Battle of Monterrey (pictured above).  Grant volunteered to carry an important dispatch (message) between U.S. military units.  The route required him to ride through an area full of sharp-shooting Mexican Army snipers.  But, Grant, used his amazing horse-riding skills to get safely passed the snipers by hanging off the side of his horse.  He was unseen and couldn't be shot at because he kept the horse between himself and the enemy snipers.  His heroic ride and other battle actions motivated and pushed the Americans to victory.  After the Mexican-American War (1846-48), Grant took some time off from the Army.  But, when the Civil War started in 1861, Ulysses S. Grant, rejoined the Army and quickly rose to General of the U.S. Army because of his inspirational leadership and smart battle tactics.
