Welcome to Flag Steward's
Stories from Our Flag

for Tuesday, April 7, 2020
... delivering a "Two-fer" that will, hopefully, make you Think & Laugh ...
Where is Our Flag, the U.S. Flag, lowered to half-staff today?
Across Arizona (as ordered at 954am MST via email) and New Jersey all (U.S. & State) Flags are half-staff.
In the counties of Bucks, Pennsylvania, Licking, Ohio, Riverside, California, and Hutchinson, Texas, and in the City of Santa Rosa, California, all Flags are half-staff to honor fallen local patriots

... invites you to Think & Laugh ;) ...
First, we'll ask you to Think,
... as Flag Steward asks, "Who Am I?" ...

I was known as an excellent horseman and, at my U.S. Military Academy (aka - also known as West Point) graduation ceremony, I set a horse high-jump record that stood for 25 years,

As a kid, I was embarassed by my real name initials - H.U.G.  But, thankfully, at West Point, they made a mistake and changed name and initials to U.S.G.

In 1862, at the Battle of Fort Donelson, in Tennessee, I led Union Army forces to their first major Civil War battle victory where I earned the nickname "Unconditional Surrender _____ (U.S.G.)."

Do you know who I am yet?
Here's one last hint.

During this week in history, on April 9th, in 1865, I accepted General Robert E. Lee's surrender of the Confederate Army at Appomattox.
