Today's Moment to Remember
On this 'Women to Honor Wednesday,' we pay tribute to Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, the United States' first female medical doctor, who has two commemorative dates near this date. On February 3, 1821, Elizabeth was born in England. Twenty-eight years later, on January 23, 1849, she received her medical degree from Geneva Medical College in Upstate New York (known today as Hobart College). Interestingly, she was only admitted to the school after all 150 male medical students unanimously approved of her enrollment in the medicine program. She made such an impact during her studies at Geneva Medical College that the Dean stood up and bowed to her at graduation. She wanted to be a surgeon, but that those plans were dashed when got an eye infection, from an infant she was treating, that caused her to lose her eye. She went on to open the first all-female staff hospital in NYC - the New York Infirmary for Indigent Women and Children. And, she developed and supervised the training of nurses during the Civil War. In summary, she broke down occupation and social barriers so women would chase their healthcare industry dreams.
