On this date, December 11, in 1816, Indiana became the 19th United State. It's called the 'Crossroads of America' because of its location and variety of landscapes - rural farms, big cities (Indianapolis), lake shoreline (Lake Michigan), and hills and flatlands situtated in the midwest of America. It is known as the "Hoosier State" - meaning the place of Indiana citizens. The origin of the term "Hoosier" is much debated, but surfaced and became popular in the 1840s. Indiana is known by most people for it sports - basketball (especially college basketball at Indiana University, Purdue University, and Notre Dame) and "Indy" car racing at the annual "Indianapolis 500"
