All Flags across St. Thomas and the U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS (USVI: from Dec. 2-4): Governor of the US Virgin Islands ordered all (US & Territorial) Flags at USVI facilities across the islands to half-staff, from sunrise on Mon., Dec. 2 to sunset on Wed., Dec. 4, as a mark of respect for the memory and longstanding service of former Territorial Court Judge Ishmael Meyers, who died on Saturday, Nov. 16.  GO HERE to read about the Flag order.

All Flags across ALABAMA (AL: on Dec. 2):  Governor ordered all (US & State) Flags at state facilities across Alabama to half-staff, from sunrise to sunset, on Mon., Dec. 2, the date of interment, as a mark of respect for Lowndes County Sheriff "Big John" Williams, who was shot and killed in the line of duty on Saturday, Nov. 23rd..  CLICK HERE to read the Flag order.

All Flags in Covington and across Newton County, Georgia (GA: until Dec. 2):  Covington Mayor and Newton County officials, assumedly with approval and authority of the Governor, ordered all (US & State) Flags  across the city and county to half-staff, immediately until sunset on Mon., Dec. 2, the date of interment, in honor of Almond Turner, a former Covington Assistant Police Chief and current Newton County Board of Education member.  CLICK HERE to read about the Flag order.

... Manifest Destiny - what was that? ...
[ American Progress , an 1872 painting by John Gast, showed America's movement westwar and the modernization of the new west.  Columbia, an old personification of the United States, is shown leading American settlers westward. She is shown bringing light from the East into the West, stringing telegraph wire, and holding a school textbook that will enlighten the pioneering citizens = public domain image ]
  On this date, December 2, in 1845, President James Polk, in his State of the Union message, recommended that citizens aggressively move westward and lay claim to America's open lands.  Journalist, John O'Sullivan (pictured in today's quote), proclaimed this westward push as "Manifest Destiny" - the belief that settlers are "destined" to spread across America.
