Today's Historical Moment to Remember
... the oldest man in space!? ...
... the oldest man in space!? ...
On this date, October 29, in 1998, the Space Shuttle Discovery blasts off with 7 astronauts aboard - including the oldest person to go into space. 38 years after he was the first American to orbit earth in the Friendship 7 / Project Mercury spaceship, John Glenn Jr., at age 77, breaks another space travel barrier. Other than this significant mission specialist making his second trip into space, this 25th Space Shuttle Discovery flight was full of the usual scientific experiments. Interestingly, Glenn was an active U.S. Senator when he was sent on this space mission. And, then President Clinton, watched this Space Shuttle mission, STS-95, launch in person, which at that time, was only the second U.S. President to attend a NASA spacecraft liftoff in person.
