Historical Moment to Remember
... the Cuban Missile Crisis ...
On this date, October 22, in 1962, the U.S. began a naval blockade of Cuba - preventing any more nuclear missiles from reaching and being set-up on the island of Cuba. Cuba's Dictator Fidel Castro (center in picture) asked the Soviet Union for help and protection after the failed Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961. Nikita Khrushchev, the Soviet Union's leader (left in picture), upset that the US had nuclear weapons in Turkey and Italy pointing at the Soviet Union, supported Castro's request. On October 15, 1962, a U.S. Air Force U-2, high-altitude spy plane, discovered and took pictures of Soviet Union nuclear missiles begin installed in Cuba. President Kennedy had several possible courses of action to take to stop this nuclear build-up just 90 miles of our U.S. border. On October 22nd, Kennedy appeared on nationwide television to tell the American people of the dangerous situation in Cuba and steps being taken to prevent a nuclear threat against the U.S. The naval blockade, surrounding and preventing Soviet ships from reaching Cuba, along with direct negotiations between Nikita and Kennedy ended the crisis peacefully.
