UNITED NATIONS DAY
On this date, October 24, in 1945, the United Nations Charter took full effect and the United Nations officially began to work. The United Nations Headquarters is located on the East River in NYC - on land donated by the Rockefeller family and is technically international territory. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt is credited with leading the creation of the United Nations. It was founded by the 5 permanent members of the UN (United Nations) Security Council - France, United Kingdom, United States, China, and Russia. The purpose of the UN is to maintain peace and international security and uphold respect for human rights. Today, there are 193 member countries that make up the UN General Assembly.

On this date, 90 years ago, October 24, in 1929, the Great Stock Market Crash began. Also known as the Wall Street Crash of 1929, the price of shares on the New York Stock Exchange plummeted (fell far down) until October 29th - Black Tuesday. This stock prices fall is considered the worst in stock market crash in U.S. history and led to the 12-year long Great Depression that affected the US and all industrial countries around the world. Thankfully, the American will to overcome won out and led us to economic recovery and has given us hope during every stock market crash since then.
