During this week in history, on October 13, in 1754, Mary Hays, nicknamed "Molly Pitcher," was born in New Jersey.  Molly Pitcher is famous for becoming the first known female fighter in the Revolutionary War.  She became a water-carrier turned artilleryman during the Battle of Monmouth in New Jersey in 1778.  Molly, who took the place of her husband, John Hays, after he collapsed during the Battle of Monmouth, (she) was famously depicted in paintings and sculptures working with the artillery.

On this date, October 16, in 1758, American teacher and writer Noah Webster (1758-1843) was born in West Hartford, Connecticut.  He is known as the "Father of American Education" because his speller books taught five generations of Americans how to spell.  And, yes, he's the Webster in the well-known Merriam-Webster Dictionary you use.  Noah Webster was the first to create and publish "An American Dicitonary of the English Language" in 1828 - after 22 years of work.  He's less well-known for, but equally influential in American history for being recruited by Alexander Hamilton to serve as an editor of the Federalist Party newspaper - which played a critical role in approval of the U.S. Constitution.  Mr. Webster died in 1843 while working on the second volume of his dictionary.  George and Charles Merriam purchased rights to Webster's 2nd volume, work-in-progress dictionary, so that's how it got the name as we know it today - the Merriam-Webster Dictionary.
