Today's Historical Moment

... a Medal of Honor Moment from WWI ...
On this date, October 8, in 1918, at the Battle of Meuse-Argonne in France, U.S. Army Corporal York, single-handedly knocked out German machine gun nests and forced the surrender of 132 German soldiers. For his heroic actions during this World War I battle, the Medal of Honor, our military's highest award for courage, was bestowed upon Sergeant Alvin York.
Today's Slice of Americana
On this date, October 8, in 1956, Don Larsen pitched the only World Series perfect game. He pitched in Game 5 against the Brooklyn Dodgers and teammates, like Yogi Berra, in picture above, celebrated with him.
[Note: A 'perfect game' in baseball means the pitcher faced only 27 batters during the entire game and got everyone of them out (3 up and 3 down for 9 innings) - no walks, no hits, and no runs. It's only happened 23 times during the 116-year history of Major League Baseball.]
