THIS WEEK'S REMINDER FROM OUR FLAG:

THIS WEEK'S REMINDER FROM OUR FLAG:
... 127 years of reciting the Pledge at schools ...
During this week, on October 12, 1892 to be exact, students in many U.S. schools first recited the 'Pledge of Allegiance' as part of a nationwide celebration of the 400th anniversary of Columbus landing in the Americas. Francis Bellamy, wrote the 'Pledge of Allegiance' and had it printed and sent to schools. Back then, the Pledge stated, "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." Over the years, the words of the Pledge were changed to what we say today. There also was an interesting 'Bellamy Salute' that was done during the early Pledge years. But, because the 'Bellamy Salute' looked similar to the World War II Nazis salute, it was changed to students placing the right hand over the heart in 1942.
