Who would have guessed the Marine Corps was born at a bar (tavern)? ;)

On November 10th in 1775, the Continental Marines (precursor to the U.S. Marine Corps) was established by the Continental Congress to be made up of two battalions of men who, "are good seamen, or so acquainted with maritime affairs as to be able to serve by sea when required; that they be distinguished by the names of the First and Second Battalion of Marines."  And, soon thereafter, Samuel Nicholas (pictured below), "Captain of Marines," began recruiting at Tun Tavern (pictured above) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
