Today's Story from Our Flag
[ Seal of the Department of Justice, which, back in 1966 (from 1940-2003), managed Immigration and citizenship services (public domain image) ]
We are the land of opportunity and place where many emigrate to find freedom. And, that was shown again on this date, November 2nd, in 1966. President Johnson signed into law the Cuban Adjustment Act - which empowered 123,000 Cubans to become permanent residents of the United States of America. It allowed citizens of Cuba who had moved to America after January 1, 1959 and lived in the US for at least one year to get permanent residence status. This protected them all from being sent back to live in Cuba under the communist ruler, Fidel Castro.
