Today's Story from Our Flag
Happy Birthday, Lady Liberty

134 years ago, on this date, October 28th, in 1886, the Statue of Liberty was unveiled and dedicated in New York Harbor by President Grover Cleveland.  A French steamer brought the disassembled statue to New York on June 17th in 1885.  Sixteen months later, a massive celebration with thousands lining the parade route in NYC happened.  When the Statue of Liberty dedication parade, led by President Cleveland, passed by the New York Stock Exchange, the stock traders threw 'ticker tape' out the windows, which began the tradition of NYC "ticker tape parades."

[Note: 'Ticker tape' is the long, thin paper printout of stock market information trasmitted via telegraph to stock exchange workers.  It was the primary way to transmit stock market information for about 100 years - from 1870 to 1970.]
