Today's Story from Our Flag
... a music (sounds!?) pioneer ...
... a music (sounds!?) pioneer ...
Dizzy Gillespie, pictured above on the left with the trumpet, once said, "I don't care much about music. What I like are sounds." Well, interestingly, the "sounds" he made with his trumpet and instrumental bandmates in the mid-1940s established a new style of music called "bebop." Now considered one of the founding fathers of modern jazz, Dizzy Gillespie was born on this date, October 21, in 1917. Amazingly, he taught himself how to play the trombone and trumpet by age 10. He went on to become one of the greatest jazz trumpeters of all time and was recognized for his extremely puffy cheeks when he played.
