Today's Story from Our Flag
... the Treaty of 1818 ...
... the Treaty of 1818 ...
Today's story is proof that bad-blooded enemies can negotiate (debate), reach a compromise, and fulfill an agreement that satisfies both parties. ;)
On this date, October 20, in 1818, U.S. and British representatives signed an agreement settling the border dispute between the United States and Canada. The 49th parallel, a geographical straight line that could be easily designated and enforced, was set as the border dividing British-controlled Canada on the north side and the USA on the south side of the parallel. The new border extended west from the land America won from the Brits during the Revolutionary War all the way to the Oregon Territory. Later, in 1846, another negotiation between the U.S. and Great Britain finished the 49th parallel border all the way to the Pacific Ocean. See the map above for list of land additions that formed today's USA.
