On this date, October 14, in 1947, then Captain Chuck Yeager, flying in the Bell X-1 "Glamorous Glennis," (pictured above and in video below) became the first person to fly faster than the speed of sound. Some might describe this amazing feat as "he broke the sound barrier" or "he went supersonic."
