Today's Story from Our Flag
... 245th Birthday for the U.S. Navy ...
... 245th Birthday for the U.S. Navy ...
The U.S. Navy, amusingly defined as "a swift sailing vessel, to carry ten carriage guns, with eighty men, be fitted, with all possible despatch for a cruise of three months," was set-up by the Continental Congress, on this date, October 13, in 1775.
Over the years, the Navy has grown from that single ship :) to more than 290 combat vessels and 3,700 aircraft now.
