Today's Story from Our Flag
... No taxation without representation ...
... No taxation without representation ...
The path to the American Revolutionary War became wider and shorter when the British began taxing the American colonies without allowing them any representation (a voice / vote) in the British Parliament. The Stamp Act was the first direct tax by the British on the American colonies. It taxed and stamped, like the one shown above, all paper goods in the colonies, like newspapers, legal documents, calendars, play cards, and more. On this date, October 7, in 1765, the Stamp Act Congress (also known as the Continental Congress of 1765), made up of delegates from 9 of the 13 colonies, met in New York City. They debated and wrote a formal protest to the British Stamp Act. The colonies were successful in getting the British rulers to end the Stamp Act. But, unfortunately, a harsher Declaratory Act, saying the British have legal control over the colonies to do whatever they want, was put in place by the British and moved us closer to Revoluntionary War.
