On this date, October 6, in 1927, the first movie with spoken words (aka a "talkie"), called The Jazz Singer, opened in New York City theaters. And not only did they talk, they also sang - as you can see from The Jazz Singer movie clip below. This motion picture audio technology breakthrough propelled America's love for movies at the local theater to new heights. And now, movie theaters, and us movie-goers, are suffering through the longest dryspell of not "going to the movie" since the 1920s.
