During the War of 1812, between the British and Americans, many Native Americans joined forces with the British to try and defeat the Americans and win back their native lands and rites. Unfortunately, on this date, October 5, in 1813, at the Battle of the Thames (pictured below), the Chief of the Shawnee Indians, Tecumseh, was killed. The loss of Tecumseh was a major blow to the efforts of Native Americans to keep their native lands from Americans. Tecumseh was a great warrior and leader, who defended his Shawnee tribe / nation and other Native Americans from losing their land and people as best he could.
