Today's Story from Our Flag
... "Don't be a Benedict Arnold" ...
... "Don't be a Benedict Arnold" ...

Alright, students this old saying, "Don't be a Benedict Arnold," isn't used as much as it used to be. Ask your parents or grandparents if they ever said it to someone. Or, from this short story, see if you can figure out what it means.
During the Revolutionary War, Benedict Arnold was a trusted leader - a Major (2-star) General in the Colonial Army. Unfortunately, he was also a spy for the British Army. Benedict Arnold gave maps and plans for the Colonial Army's West Point fort to the British Army. The plans showed the British how the Colonials were using the West Point fort to defend a key part of the Hudson River. And, on this date September 21, in 1780, the Colonial (American) troops learned that Benedict Arnold had turned against them and given away important information to their enemy - the British Army. When Benedict realized his trickery (spying) had been discovered by the Colonial Army he fled to the British. For this, Benedict Arnold became known as "America's most well-known traitor."
Now, students, you probably understand what it means when friends say, "Don't be a Benedict Arnold."
( Don't be untrustworthy ;)
