Today's Story from Our Flag
"Black Tuesday" of the Wall Street Crash of 1929
"Black Tuesday" of the Wall Street Crash of 1929
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (stock market) fell 13% of "Black Monday" and then dropped another 12% on "Black Tuesday" (October 29, 1929). This stock crash (sell-off of stocks) at Wall Street in New York City signaled the end of the roaring 1920s and the beginning of the Great Depression in America during the 1930s. The stock market continued to sink in value until it reached its low point in 1932, an 89% drop in less than 3 years. And, it took the stock market (DJIA - Dow Jones Industrial Average) 22 years, until 1954, to finally rise back up to the peak value it had in September of 1929 before the crash.
Quote from Our Flag
... describing how the Great Crash happened ...
"We are reaping the natural fruit of the orgy of speculation in which millions of people have indulged.
It was inevitable, because of the tremendous increase in the number of stockholders in recent years,
that the number of sellers would be greater than ever when the boom ended and selling took the place of buying."
-Albert Wiggin, President of Chase National Bank
