Today's Story from Our Flag
On this date, October 15, in 1991, Clarence Thomas, by a U.S. Senate vote of 52-48, was confirmed as the next Supreme Court Justice. He was nominated by President George H. W. Bush to replace Justice Thurgood Marshall. Justice Thomas amazingly rose from a childhood of poverty to the top of the U.S. justice system.
He was born in Georgia as a direct descendant of slaves, was fatherless after age 2, moved in with his grandparents so as not to be homeless at age 7, and became the first family member to attend college. His youthful determination to be a positive contributor (to be a STUD citizen;) within American society in the face of many obstacles is a shining example for our youth to know of and follow.

Quote from Our Flag
"My grandfather, when he talked about freedom,
his view was that you had obligations or responsibilities,
and when you fulfilled those obligations or responsibilities,
that then gave you the liberty to do other things."
- Clarence Thomas, Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court
