Today's Story from Our Flag
Today is Leif Erikson Day?! What is that and who is he? I asked myself the same thing when I found out about this national observance day. On this date, October 9, in 1825, the first Norwegian (Norse) immigrants arrived at Ellis Island aboard a Norwegian ship called Restauration. This led the way for a large influx of Norwegians immigrated to America. So, what does that have to do with Leif Erikson?
Leif Erikson, a Norse explorer, is credited with leading the first Europeans to set foot upon the soil of North America in the year 1000. That's nearly 500 years before Columbus discovered America. The legend of Leif Erikson's arrival was validated by President Calvin Coolidge in 1925, when he called Leif as the discoverer of America. I know I'm confused as well. In any event, a national day of recognition was established by Congress in 1964 and has been proclaimed annually by Presidents ever since.
And, because there's no official date for Leif Erikson's arrival in North America, Congress chose October 9th because that was a well documented arrival date for the first Norwegian immigrants.
