Today's Story from Our Flag
On this date, October 1, in 1962, James Meredith became the first African-American student admitted to the University of Mississippi (aka Ole Miss). After being denied admission twice, James filed a lawsuit against the University and won the case. Unfortunately, the Mississippi Governor would not follow the district court order to allow Meredith to become a student at the all-white university. So,
U.S. Attorney General, Robert Kennedy, with President JKF's approval, sent in federal forces (U.S. Marshals and other agents) to escort Meredith to his classes. A year later, thanks to college courses he already completed, Meredith, an Air Force Veteran, graduated from Ole Miss ( see pic below).
"I believed, and believe now, that I have a Divine Responsibility... I am familiar with the probable difficulties involved in such a move as I am undertaking and I am fully prepared to pursue it all the way to a degree from the University of Mississippi."
