Today's Story from Our Flag
On this date, September 24, in 1755, John Marshall, "The Great Chief Justice," was born in Virginia.
He was nominated by President John Adams (see the nomination below) and served as Chief Justice for the U.S. Supreme Court from 1801 to 1835 - still the longest serving Chief Justice ever. He's nicknamed "The Great Chief Justice" because he solidified the role of the Supreme Court as an independent and co-equal branch of the U.S. government. He did so by leading judicial reviews that struck down state and federal laws that conflicted with the U.S. Constitution.

Thought-provoking quotes from John Marshall
that apply to America's current situation:
"To listen well
is as powerful a means of communication and influence
as to talk well."
"What is it that makes us trust our judges?
Their independence in office
and manner of appointment."
