[ DON'T READ ALOUD ANY TEXT BETWEEN BRACKETS ;) ]
[ This is the script for performing an OUTDOOR flag ceremony on 2/9/2018]

Good morning, ___(insert name of school, such as "Heritage Elementary")  ___

Welcome to today's Beacon of Honor
Flag-Raising Ceremony
for Friday, February 9th
#FlagDayFriday

Students do you know who ordered the U.S. and Colorado flags to be lowered to half-staff from Tuesday until Saturday, and why?
PLEASE, BE RESPECTFUL and LISTEN CLOSELY

TODAY'S FLAG STATUS:
Picture
The Governor of Colorado ordered Our Flags to fly at half-staff, from sunrise on Tuesday to sunset this Saturday, February 10th, to honor El Paso County Deputy Micah Flick, whose funeral is on Saturday.  Deputy Flick, age 34, was shot and killed while conducting an auto theft investigation on Monday afternoon.

[Note: Raise the U.S. Flag (and Colorado Flag, if you have one) to the top of the flagpole and then, while playing 'Taps' music, very slowly lower Our Flag to half-staff (halfway down the flagpole).  Tie off the flag rope at that position.]

THIS WEEK'S REMINDER FROM OUR FLAG - TO SERVE & PROTECT LIKE DEPUTY FLICK:

Deputy Flick served and protected the citizens of El Paso County, which includes the city of Colorado Springs, for 11 years.  Deputy Micah Flick did not hesitate to carry-out his duties during a dangerous situation on Monday, nor did his teammates who were shot, but survived - El Paso County Sergeant Jake Abendshan and Deputy Scott Stone, as well as, Colorado Spring Police Department Detective Marcus Yanez.

In a statement to the public, Flick's family wrote, "
Micah was truly passionate about helping those who could not help themselves. Knowing the risks, he pursued that mission with all he had. Our family is grieving the loss of a hero; a man who reacted instantaneously and selflessly to protect the public and fellow law enforcement officers."

Deputy Flick grew up in Colorado Springs, graduated from Colorado Springs Christian Schools, and leaves behind a wife and 7-year old fraternal twins, a boy and a girl.

In closing, ...
... let's show our appreciation and pride for the brave service of Deputy Micah Flick, those injured alongside him on Monday, and all of our law enforcement community by dedicating this Pledge of Allegiance to them.
Please, stand and place our hands upon our hearts as we state the Pledge of Allegiance.

The U.S. Flag Code:
provides Our Flag's Rules and Regulations

[HIGHLIGHTS OF: The U.S. Flag Code stating how citizens should conduct themselves during this ceremony is below.]

Title 36, Chapter 10 PATRIOTIC CUSTOMS
National anthem; Star-Spangled Banner, conduct during playing:
During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should render the military salute at the first note of the anthem and retain this position until the last note. When the flag is not displayed, those present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed there.
Note: A new law was passed on October 30, 2008 that authorizes veterans and active-duty military not in uniform can now render the military-style hand salute during the playing of the national anthem. This publication is currently being updated to reflect the new law.

Pledge of Allegiance to the flag; manner of delivery:

The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, "I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.", should be rendered by standing at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. When not in uniform men should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should remain silent, face the flag, and render the military salute.
