Fallen Patriot Commemoration
This Interactive American Flag is dedicated to:
U.S. Army Sergeant
Jonathan B. Shields of Atlanta, GA
[ listed as second resident of Atlanta killed in the Global War on Terror ]

​SGT Shields, 25, served in Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF)
with 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment (Armor), 1st Cavalry Division from Ft. Hood, TX
Killed on November, 12, 2004, during a night time combat operation when the M1 Abrams tank he was commanding rolled over in an un-marked trench in Fallujah, Iraq

We honor and thank SGT Shields for defending our freedoms and fighting to liberate the lives of others.

"I served with Shields in the same company for about 3 years. He was a great person to know, and even better man to have on your side. Shields could always get a smile out of me no matter how mad or depressed I was. He just had that thing about him that no matter how bad things seemed everything was actually alright. I always knew if I need anything that I wasn't able to get Shields would know someone that would take care of us, that was the type of person he was, he knew everyone and everyone liked him. It was a privilege to have known him, and an honor to have served in combat with him. He will always be missed and never forgotten. See ya on the other side."

Awarded Silver Star, Bronze Star, and 45 Air Medals while serving as scout helicopter pilot ( shot down 3 times ;) in Vietnam
Died December 8, 2008, age 62, of a Vietnam War related illness 
Survived by wife, Ellen Sweeney, two children and three grandchildren
We honor and thank U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Ed Sweeney Jr. for defending our freedoms and fighting to liberate the lives of others.

​Ed Sweeney Jr. inspires us with his leadership - how he looked out for the welfare of his men:
Chief Warrant Officer Frank Glenn, a fellow Vietnam War scout helicopter pilot of Platoon Leader Ed Sweeney, repeated Captain Sweeney's directive to his 9 scout pilots, "Don't be a cowboy, don't take any unnecessary risks, no hot-dogging, and don't get your crew killed.  Your job is to return to base everyday."
