Students do you know who ordered the U.S. and Colorado flags to be lowered to half-staff from Tuesday until Saturday, and why?
PLEASE, BE RESPECTFUL and LISTEN CLOSELY
TODAY'S FLAG STATUS:
The Governor of Colorado ordered Our Flags to fly at half-staff, from sunrise on Tuesday to sunset this Saturday, February 10th, to honor El Paso County Deputy Micah Flick, whose funeral is on Saturday. Deputy Flick, age ?? and married with two 7-year old twin daughters??, was shot and killed while conducting an auto theft investigation on Monday afternoon. Today, students at schools across Colorado are paying their final respects to Micah Flick by doing this pre-Pledge tribute.
THIS WEEK'S FALLEN MILITARY TO HONOR:
During this past week, thankfully, there were no new fallen combatants in the Global War on Terrorism. So far, in 2018, there have been 2 fallen U.S. Army soldiers - 1 serving in Iraq and 1 in Afghanistan.
THIS WEEK'S HISTORICAL REMINDER FROM OUR FLAG:
For this #FlagDayFriday, we celebrate the African American History Month theme of "African Americans in Time of War," by recalling the heroics of the first African American recipient of the Medal of Honor, Sergeant William Harvey Carney of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. During the Civil War's Battle of Fort Wagner, Carney led the charge of Union soldiers attacking Fort Wagner with only the U.S. Flag in his hands. He was wounded by at least 3 gunshots, but continued to guide his fellow soldiers and never let Our Flag fall to the ground. While getting medical treatment after the battle, he proudly proclaimed, " ... "
RECALLING DEPUTY MICAH FLICK'S LIFE OF SERVICE:
Like Medal of Honor recipient Carney, Deputy Micah Flick, did not hesitate to carry-out his duties during a dangerous situation on Monday. He served and protected the citizens of El Paso County, which includes the city of Colorado Springs, for 11 years. In fact, Monday was the 11th anniversary of him joining the El Paso County Sheriff's Office back in 2007. Sheriff Elder, said this about Deputy Flick, "He was a great man who was extremely well-respected and did well at what he did. That's why he progressed through the ranks in quick fashion."
And, in a statement to the public, Flick's family wrote, "Micah was truly passionate about helping those who could not help themselves. Knowing the risks, he pursued that mission with all he had. Our family is grieving the loss of a hero; a man who reacted instantaneously and selflessly to protect the public and fellow law enforcement officers."
Deputy Flick grew up in Colorado Springs, graduated from Colorado Springs Christian Schools, and leaves behind wife and 7-year old fraternal twins, a boy and a girl.
[Optional: 'Taps' music to play before the Pledge (adds 1-minute to ceremony)]
In closing, ...
... let's show our appreciation and pride for the brave service of Deputy Micah Flick, those injured alongside him on Monday, and all of our law enforcement community by dedicating this Pledge of Allegiance to them.
Please, stand and place our hands upon our hearts as we state the Pledge of Allegiance.
Thanks for participating in today's Beacon of Honor - Awakens Our Flag
