... Since Monday, June 14, was both Flag Day and the US Army birthday, and we focused on Flag Day that day, we're celebrating a belated birthday for the US Army today ...

On June 14th of 1775, the Second Continental Congress established the Continental Army by passing the following resolution:
"Resolved, That six companies of expert riflemen, be immediately raised in Pennsylvania, two in Maryland, and two in Virginia; … [and] that each company, as soon as completed, shall march and join the army near Boston, to be there employed as light infantry, under the command of the chief Officer in that army."
Since then, June 14th has been proclaimed as the U.S. Army's birthday.

On the same day that Congress created the Continental Army, Sam Adams and John Adams nominated George Washington to be "Commander-in-Chief." Then, the next day, June 15, 1775, Washington was unanimously selected as "General & Commander-in-Chief of the Army of the United Colonies and of all forces raised or to be raised by them." Congress told Washington to immediately head to Boston and take charge of the forces there involved in the Siege of Bsoton on June, 22, 1775.
