Today's Historical, 'Be a Stud Citizen,' Message from Our Flag
... recalls a little, 6-year old heroine (a she-roe as some call it) who knocked down the doors of racial discrimination (unfair, separate education based on skin color) at her school ...

To celebrate Women's History Month, this week's Be a Stud Citizen' Message relays the triumphant story of another pioneering woman - who broke down cultural barriers and brought America one-step closer to fulfilling its promise "that all men (& women) are created equal."
Back in November of 1960, a brave 6-year old African-American girl, Ruby Bridges, was the first student to desegregate (give equal access to all students regardless of their skin color) New Orleans' all-white schools - at William Frantz Elementary School. Can you imagine being that young and walking, with US Marshals as your security guards, into an all-white school? Ruby went to school in the face of daily protesters cursing her and making threats to her life - all so she could prove her civil right to attend a public school no matter one's skin color.
On the first day at school, she saw upset white parents come in to the school and take their kids home because they didn't want them near Ruby - as if she was a disease. Ruby must have been upset to see this and she got an even bigger disappointment the next day. On day 2 for Ruby, to show their disapproval, no other students came to school and every teacher, except one, refused to teach her. Slowly over the next few days and weeks, students returned to school, but would not attend class with Ruby. So, for over a year, Ruby was the only student in her 1st Grade class taught by Barbara Henry, a teacher from Boston, MA.

Today's 'Be a Stud Citizen' Quote from Our Flag
"(She) showed a lot of courage.
She never cried.
She didn't whimper.
...and, we're all very very proud of her."
- U.S. Marshal Charles Burke talking about his experience protecting Ruby going to and from school everyday
[ "The Problem we all Live with" painting by Norman Rockwell = fair / educational use ]
