To celebrate Women's History Month, the next 3 weekly 'Be a Stud Citizen' Messages will relay triumphant stories pioneering women - who broke down cultural barriers and brought America one-step closer to fulfilling its promise "that all men (& women) are created equal."
This week's amazingly smart, determined, patriotic woman was unknown to me and most Americans until the movie 'Hidden Figures' was released in 2017. 'Hidden Figures' highlighted 3 brilliant African-American women who served as "computers" for NASA in the 1950s and 60s. NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) hired many women, including 3 the black women, Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson, and Dorothy Vaughan, featured in 'Hidden Figures', to use their talented math brains to "compute" important equations that would enable America to win the 'Race to Space' against the Russians during the Cold War. And, these women performed admirably in the face of many discriminatory work conditions (unfair practices against gender and race). NASA, like most big, corporate American companies back then, was a white, male-dominated organization. But, these women turned NASA's doubters into believers as they helped America do what seemed impossible - launch an American into space, then into orbit, and ultimately, on to the moon in the 1960s.

And, Katherine Johnson, was a particular stand-out amongst them all. So much so, that NASA named one its campus buildings after her (2018), NASA dedicated a spacecraft and mission in her name (the S.S. Katherine Johnson, a robotic spacecraft, flew to the International Space Station in Feb. 2021), a Presidential Medal of Freedom was bestowed upon her in 2015, and a Congressional Gold Medal in 2019.
Her most famous act, as re-enacted in the movie 'Hidden Figures,' was to be the first woman in NASA history to co-author a flight research report. The report was on the spaceflight of the first American to go into orbit (go around the Earth) - the mission famously completed by John Glenn. Before take-off, John Glenn specifically asked for Katherine Johnson to check (verify) the math calculations for his flight path to ensure they were correct. And, she was absolutely right.
