On this date, October 7th of 1826, the Granite Railway in Quincy, Massachusetts, began operating. This line of tracks, claimed to be America's first commercial railroad, carried stones from the rock quarry in Quincy to the Neoponset dock to help construct the Bunker Hill Monument in Boston. The ease with which railroads enabled shipment of valuable goods helped accelerate America's economy from coast to coast in the coming years and still today.

When not in uniform men should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should remain silent, face the flag, and render the military salute.
