On this date, August 9th, of 1944, Smokey Bear was first shown in posters by the US Forest Service and Wartime Advertising Council. Smokey Bear is the longest-running public service announcement (ad campaign) in US history. Smokey is used to promote the prevention of forest fires.

All Flags at State Capitol of CALIFORNIA (CA: Aug. 9): CA Governor ordered all Flags at the State Capitol, in a memo posted to Governor's website on Mon., Aug. 8, to half-staff, without a specific date/time set by the Governor, so assumedly Capitol staff is enabling this tribute on Tue., Aug. 9, in honor of California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) Engineer Ali Shabazz, who died during an on-duty vehicle accident. All Flags atop State Capitol of SOUTH DAKOTA (SD: Aug. 9): South Dakota's Governor ordered flags atop the State Capitol to half-staff, from sunrise to sunset, on Tue., Aug. 9, the date of his funeral, in honor of 5th Circuit Court Presiding Judge Jon Flemmer of Webster. All Flags across NORTH CAROLINA (NC: Aug. 2 - 9): North Carolina's Governor ordered all (US & State) Flags at government / public facilities across the state, immediately to half-staff, on Tue., Aug. 2, until sunset on Tue., Aug. 9, the date of his interment, in honor of Wayne County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Matthew Fishman who was shot in the line of duty on Monday, Aug. 1. Fishman along with officers Cpl. All Commonwealth (State) Flags across Westmoreland County, PENNSYLVANIA (PA: Aug. 8 - 12): PA's Governor ordered all Commonwealth (State) Flags at all state / public / government facilities in Westmoreland County to half-staff, immediately on Mon., Aug. 8, until sunset on Fri., Aug. 12, in honor of North Huntingdon EMS Rescue and Monroeville Fire/EMS paramedic Fred Manno, who died on Saturday, July 30, 2022 as a result of injuries sustained while performing his duties on Tuesday, July 19, 2022. Title 36, Chapter 10 PATRIOTIC CUSTOMS
National anthem; Star-Spangled Banner, conduct during playing:
During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should render the military salute at the first note of the anthem and retain this position until the last note. When the flag is not displayed, those present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed there.
Note: A new law was passed on October 30, 2008 that authorizes veterans and active-duty military not in uniform can now render the military-style hand salute during the playing of the national anthem. This publication is currently being updated to reflect the new law.
Pledge of Allegiance to the flag; manner of delivery:
The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, "I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.", should be rendered by standing at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart.
