On this date, September 23, 1806, after two years, four months, and ten days, the Lewis & Clark expedition is completed where it began in St. Louis. The Lewis and Clark Expedition from May 1804 to September 1806, also known as the Corps of Discovery Expedition, was the first American expedition to cross what is now the western portion of the U.S. It began at St. Charles, near St. Louis, MO, and moved westward. The Corps of Discovery, a group of US Army volunteers, was led by Captain Meriwether Lewis and Lieutenant William Clark.
