On this date, August 31st, in 1864, General Sherman began an important attack on the city of Atlanta, Georgia. On their way to Atlanta, by way of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Sherman's army had soundly beaten Confederat General Johnston's retreating forces. Upset at Johnston's retreat to Atlanta, Confederate President Jefferson Davis replaced Johnston with a General Hood - a more aggressive leader who tried and failed miserably at challenging Sherman's armies. Hood's loss opened the door to Sherman's famous "March to the Sea." His forces went from Atlanta to the coastal city of Savannah and destroyed much of the South's infrastructure ( transportation and supply routes ) along the way; thereby, speeding up the end of the Civil War with a victory by the Union forces.
