On this date, August 24th, in 1814, British forces burned many of Washington City's (later renamed Washington, D.C.) most important buildings - including the US Capitol, White House, US Treasury building, Department of War building, and others.

Towards the end of the War of 1812, another, lesser known war between the United States of America and the British, the British, led by General Ross, marched into Washington DC unopposed. The Brits had defeated American forces at the Battle of Bladensburg and had a clear path to Washington DC - just 8 miles away. That evening, in retaliation for American forces destroying the British port, Port Dover in Canada, the Brits got revenge. They set fire to multiple government and military buildings after searching them for war supplies.
Thankfully, despite the British beatdown at Washington DC, the American forces kept defeating the Brits on many other battlefronts. Just 8 months after destroying America's Capitol City, truce (agreement to end fighting) was reached with the United Kingdom in January 1815.

Today's Insightful Quote from Our Flag
I
I .... "never dreamt for one minute that an army of 3,500 men
with 1,000 marines reinforcement,
with no cavalry,
hardly any artillery,
could march 50 miles inland and capture an enemy capital."
- Major General Ross
British commander who led the raid and burning of Washington City
