On this date, August 23rd, in 1970, Mexican-American labor union leader, César Chávez, began the Salad Bowl strike - the largest farm worker strike in U.S. history. Chávez's aggressive, but nonviolent, farm workers' boycotts caught national attention and led to an improvement of migrant farm worker's conditions. Cesar Chavez, along with Dolores Huerta, co-founded the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA). This union, formed to protect farm workers' rights and bring equality, equity, and justice to farm labor practices, later merged to become the United Farm Workers (UFW).
