Today's Historical Moment from Our Flag
... recalls the birth and life of the Commander of the Corps of Discovery - what and who is that? ...

​On this date, August 18, of 1774, Captain Meriweather Lewis, leader of the famous Lewis & Clark Expedition (aka Corps of Discovery) was born in the Colony of Virginia.  After the Louisiana Purchase, in 1803, President Jefferson created a team of explorers to go as far west as possible and claim the land for the United States.  Meriweather Lewis, who recruited William Clark to co-lead, put together the Corps of Discovery to leave from the St. Louis, Missouri area and head by way of the Missouri River.  So, in 1804, the 2 and 1/2 year, 8,000+ mile roundtrip to the Oregon coast began.
