On this date, August 6th in 1945, the US Army Air Corps' B-29 named "Enola Gay" dropped the world's first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. As you can see from the 'before and after' pictures above, the A-bomb did exactly what the Allies warned the Imperial Japanese leaders - "prompt and utter destruction." This first atomic bombing by the Allies (U.S. with approval from U.K.) was done by a special outfitted B-29 Superfortress bomber that flew from Tinian to its target and back. The bombing killed between 90,000 to 146,000 people in Hiroshima. The decision was made to drop the bomb after the Japanese ignored the Allies call for an unconditional surrender.
[ public domain images = above is closeup of the damage to Hiroshima with inscription naming the mission commader / pilot, Col. Tibbets, and below is a pic of the B-29 squadron, including the Enola Gay, outfitted to drop A-bombs ]
Today's Insightful Quote from Our Flag
"What has kept the world safe from the bomb since 1945
has not been deterrence,
in the sense of fear of specific weapons,
so much as it's been memory.
The memory of what happened at Hiroshima."
- John Hersey, American writer
