Today's Historical Moment from Our Flag
... recalls WWII Navy Lieutenant (JG - Junior Grade) John F. Kennedy's heroic act ...

[ Navy Lieutenant John F. Kennedy (standing far right) with his PT-109 crew in 1943. Two crew members were killed by a Japanese destroyer that attacked them the day JFK earned his medals. ]

Beginning on this date, August 1st and into August 2nd, of 1943, then Navy Lieutenant (JG - Junior Grade), later US President, John F. Kennedy, and his PT-109 (a motorized torpedo boat) crew were on search & destroy mission in the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific.  During this mission, two of JFK's crew were killed in action, when their PT boat was destroyed.  JFK helped rescue swim a crewmate to safety - pulling him 3.75 miles.  For his actions, JFK was awarded the Navy-Marine Corps medal for heroism and Purple Heart for his injuries
