National Buffalo Soldiers Day celebrates all that African-American troops did the US military after the Civil War - most notably security, law enforcement, and other frontier activities. The first unit called, "Buffalo Soldiers," was formed at Fort Leavenworth, KS, in 1866. Other black soldier units were formed and performed honorably and courageously in WWII. During the Korean War, there were no segregated (separated by race / skin color) units. So, this marked the end of the Buffalo Soldiers named units.
So, how did this name come to be? Historians don't know the origin of the name Buffalo Soldiers. Some believe it has to do with the buffalo skins they wore to keep warm on the western frontier.
